I once fired a secretary before she ever worked a day. She was supposed to start at 7am. She called at 11am and said her mom’s house was hit by a falling tree. I asked when it happened she said around 2am. I asked her, “So since 2am you just decided to call now at 11am?” She said she be in by 1pm. I said don’t bother. If she had called me somewhere around 7am or before, she would have kept her job.
I always used to be at work before my secretary. For many years I the Night Manager at high-end resorts. I usually was on the property by around 10:30 – 11:00 pm and worked until 8:00 – 9:00 am depending on what was happening. My personal assistant (secretary) worked from 7 am – 3 pm, so she only had to put up with me for a couple of hours a day. She liked that arrangement.
