Mom, do ou have any strong views on politics? whenever a lively political discussion is going on....you get real quiet. Arguing about politics is whats holding america back. I would argue that arguing is the hallmark of a healthy democracy! - arguably.

Arguments, yes – debates, yes: But these involve two sides. And a willingness to listen as well as to talk. Give and take…Just saying…

Sreejay: Just two points of view got us into this situation. All progress first came from third (or fourth or fifth) party platforms.

It was designed to be a democratic republic: democratic in that the ultimate power is in the people with both majority and minority have rights the other cannot infringe upon; republic in that laws are made by representatives elected by the people rather than everyone voting on everything directly. We lost that. We are now a plutocratic oligarchy and The People are finally rising up. Mussolini had his blackshirts; Hitler had his brownshirts; and Bloomberg has his whiteshirts, but they inevitably end up the same.

Our constitution not only allows, but encourages political dissent. In order for a democracy, or in our case a republic, to survive we must openly discuss, and even argue, about our political views. Both parties at one time or another have attempted to squelch disagreement to their views, and they were wrong to do so.

tbh, I’m often like this too… my colleagues love getting into debates on sensitive subjects like politics and religion, I figure since I have to be with them sometimes 18 hours a day I’d rather keep things civil…
