I get that Will Smith’s actions were inexcusable. Fine. But I do think the reaction (a 10-year ban) has been overblown. Why? First, because to the best of my knowledge, he’s never done anything like this before. Second, Chris Rock was making fun of his wife’s medical condition, and it had visibly hurt her. I don’t condone any violence, but neither should we ever condone mocking someone else’s appearance — especially when it’s due to a medical condition or something they can’t do anything about.
