Skelton is correct. In a time without the web or even faxes, “going viral” would have been a matter of everyone you run into talking about a joke they’d all seen on TV the night before. When there were only three broadcast networks and no cable, this was fairly common, even more so if said joke were from a highly rated prime time show. This joke was VIRAL for about a week. Part of its appeal was Skelton’s goofball delivery, plus the fact that he was often so tickled at his own humor that he could barely deliver it for cracking up during the telling.
