That’s a toucan.

It’s a facemask.

After being shooed away from the feeder, to let the “pretty birds” eat, the grackle got a disguise.

Last year a mysterious disease killed a lot song birds. So the mask is reminiscent of the head gear worn by Plague doctors during the Plague years in Europe. The mask, filled with herbs or other material, was presumed to prevent infection. Evidently, the theory was that Plague was air transmissible, “bad humors” being the cause rather than an infection spread by fleas. As yet, there has been no cause found for the condition which killed birds last year.

Looks like he is wearing a beak mask?

Plague mask. Specifically of the type worn by doctors during the plague. The purpose of the beak was to put, basically a potpourri of scents to mask the smell caused from the skin lesions of the disease on their patients, the dead, etc. Ring around the rosy y’all.

Actually he is wearing an ice breaker because the bird bath is frozen.
