There is a file extension .jif (look it up if you don’t believe me) so it has always made sense to pronounce .gif with a hard G so you can tell the two apart (despite what some folks say the developer said).
Besides, the G in Graphics Interchange Format is pronounced with hard G so there’s another reason why I’ve always pronounced it that way myself long before I heard about what the developer supposedly says. What he’s supposed to have said makes no sense in the real world and sounds like folks just trying to justify their mispronouncing the G sound from Graphics.
