I spent part of my Christmas break in the hospital getting an implant to regulate my heartbeat. I had a bit of an incident last Tuesday that resulted in 100 Joules of electricity being applied to my chest.
For some reason the electronics that regulate my heart decided to go haywire. Mechanically (muscles, chambers, valves, etc.) my heart is in excellent condition and this was a major factor in my heart sustaining NO damage.
Now that I have it “rewired,” I am in excellent health again and cleared by my doctors to resume an unrestricted lifestyle. They instructed me to keep doing what I have been doing.
In fact, I am better off now. I had an undiagnosed medical condition which is now fixed.
I started taking my health seriously in my mid-30’s. I gave up smoking and started exercising (jogging / walking) and eating sensibly (I’m not a health food nut, but I don’t live on bacon cheeseburgers either). So I have been in training for this cardiac incident for 40 years.
So, for those of you who have made New Year’s resolutions to quit smoking, eat better and exercise, I suggest you stick with them.
