If you’ve ever watched an inch worm ( Geometridae Moth ) move, they grasp with their front legs and pull their rear legs up. They then stretch out for another grab. The action looks as though the critter is measuring the space it travels. The name is not really from the size of the animal but from the way it moves. Your welcome and I’ll reset my glasses on my nose and move on.
Common mistake to add significant figures to erroneously make a measurement seem more precise. You cannot take a measurement, presumably precise to the 1/10th of an inch, i.e. two significant figures, and report it in another measurement system to three significant figures.
While an inch is 2.54 centimeters, by definition, a worm is as long as a worm. :)
Well, the name. refers to the movement of the critter, as though it’s measuring something (as seen in the jar). Regionally known as a measuring-worm and span-worm (and UK, looper). N

Yep he’s right about that…that little fella is 0.02 cm shy of being an inch worm. Hey wait a minute, does Monty live in Canada?

Close enough to an inch for non-scientific purposes.

I immediately started singing the inchworm song from the movie, Hans Christian Andersen, starring Danny Kaye. I think that’s my favorite movie of his.

Reminds me of one of my early guitar lessons when I was taught to play the Mills Brothers’ “Glow Worm”. Haven’t played that for 40 years.
