The boxer was Jim Jeffries. Jeff was once called Othello Jeffrey, but most of the time he was just Little Jeff.

Is this the first incident of a comic character breaking the fourth wall?

Home for the feeble-minded. It’s a wonder Mutt didn’t sock him.

Bud Fisher had several characters in the original strip. Jeff’s name is Jefferies and they were both inmates at a nuthouse.

So Mutt is older. And Jeff is officially an idiot.

Back when I was a kid my family nicknamed my brother and I Mutt and Jeff.

To this day one of my Uncles will still call me Mutt.

His full name is Jeffrey Jefferson Jeffries.
