In 2005 there was supposedly too much helium in the national reserve, so congress decided to sell it off. By 2013 it was in limited supply and we were in danger of not having enough.
I believe that’s how it started, but now that there is an increasing demand for it for scientific and medical equipment, there has been a move to slow down consumption. I have read that, at least at this point, it is hard to obtain from the atmosphere (it can actually float away from the atmosphere), and natural gas wells are non-renewable.

Helium is used in many high-tech applications and the demand for it is growing. Unfortunately, there is a limited supply of it.
Scientists have been having a hard time convincing the general public that helium should be conserved.

The helium shortage may be incentive to return to the moon, to mine it.

HE sounds like he has a big ego, like that insurance box.

Nab once again proves his poor grasp of science and Baslim offers an excellent explanation of the He situation.
I say this as one that does use LHe (liquid helium) on a regular basis for my research and has seen the costs skyrocket over the past 15 or so years.
