I notice Aunt Fritzi is always harsh with Nancy. Doesn’t she know any words other than NO!

Now that you mention it, Nancy does kind of look like Chairman Mao.

Don’t be silly, honey. We won’t become communist but in the future we’ll become socialists!

I wrecked my car in Mississippi in 1971. I was unhurt, my friend, an Air Force guy, had a small bruise on his forehead.

After finding a phone at a gas station and calling for assistance, I returned to find two highway cops looking over the wreckage. They had seen my underground newspapers… for which I wrote, my copy of Chairman Mao’s little red book, my paperback biography of Angela Davis. My friend had stayed behind at the gas station. This was when Mississippi was only beginning to cool off from the feverish Civil Rights Era and all its accompanying murderous atrocities, only seven years after the infamous murders of three young civil rights advocates in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The wreck was a little over a hundred miles from there. Both the local police department and the county sheriff’s office were involved in the crime or the cover up.

Of all the questions the cops might have asked me, the very first was, “Was anyone else in the car?” Followed immediately by “Was he black?” I probably spared myself some difficulty by saying “He’s white. I was taking him back to Keesler Air Force Base.”

The “Nancy” strip above was published when I was two months old.
