@Guy GilchristI keep forgetting, since I haven’t read Krazy Kat since the late 1990s and early 2000s (I lost my Krazy Kat collection)…is Krazy male or female?
Krazy Kat claimed to be a bachelor and a spinster, but Herriman referred to him as “he.” Maybe this is a different cat life of the 9. Or Caspar could be confused.
O.K., we have the Harveytoons Jack-in-The-Box, then Krazy Kat, which was animated for King Features Syndicate TV as we continue through the copyright maze; curious to see what comes next…
George Herriman said Krazy was a “pixie” who could be either male or female. In the early 1960s animated cartoons, Krazy was always a she.
To his credit, “Citizen” Hearst said that Krazy would continue in his papers regardless of what his editors said. That’s my #2 reason for respecting the man. What’s #1? Glad you asked! In 1929 Hearst read a new book that amazed even him. He sent Joe Connelly, his main man at King Features, a telegram that said, “HIRE RIPLEY”.
In the 1960s cartoons Krazy Kat was female. In his movie Steven Spielberg explained how Casper died. Now can any1 explain what kind od animals the Warners (Yakko, Wakko & Dot) of Animaniacs are? I say they’re dogs (or dawgs) of a breed related to Disney’s Goofy.
Hello Guy Gilchrist, would you know someone who mightbe interested in my Shadow collection?? I really don’t wantto sell it, but I need to buy a vehicle that my disabled wife& I can get around in! We cannot use public transportation& the companies that serve handicapped people in our cityare not very reliable! Will someone help us, PLEASE!!Contact me @ MIKEIMJ@YAHOO.COMTHANK YOU!!
To quote wikipedia, that quotes the strip creator of Krazy Kat: When filmmaker Frank Capra, a fan of the strip, asked Herriman to straightforwardly define the character’s sex, the cartoonist admitted that Krazy was “something like a sprite, an elf. They have no sex. So that Kat can’t be a he or a she. The Kat’s a spirit—a pixie—free to butt into anything.”15 Most characters inside the strip use “he” and “him” to refer to Krazy, likely as a gender-neutral “he”.
It doesn’t wash; Hearst was a large-scale /consumer/ of paper, and would have profited tremendously from a cheaper source. The demonization of marijuana is just another story of good old American puritanism and racism.

Krazy Kat is a she. I read the old strips daily over on the “other” comic strip site.

As the Warners explained in one of their first cartoons (set to a delicious faux-Sondheim tune), what they are is Cute!

Krazy’s gender was indeterminate. Sometimes referred to has he or she in the strip. In the Al Brodax cartoon, Krazy Kat was portrayed as female.
