All men should be forced to undergo periodic enforced “bachelorhood” episodes where they are forced to undergo living “alone” – this MUST be done under the “tutelage” of someone who will NOT allow the man to slide into his default “slob” mode – that’s what was so great about the military “draft” – most men who were caught up in it at least emerged with the “rudiments” of how to take care of themselves- military service was NOT just about “serving” one’s country…
Just imagine just how Donnie John might have turned out if he’d been forced to take responsibility for his life while “growing up”…
I got tired of trying to throw stuff away, and my wife telling me “No, we might need that someday”…I still have boxes in the basement from 30 years ago…I’m talking camera boxes, cd player boxes, shoe boxes…I have things that I would love to throw out, but now I need a dumpster, all because she didn’t want to throw anything away. I gave up. I do my own laundry, always have. I never cook anymore, because I used to work in a restaurant, and got tired of cooking. Now I eat “ready to eat” stuff…something I can put on a paperplate, microwave, and eat.

I like to remind my wife that I’m well equipped to be a bachelor again if she makes it necessary. Mom made sure of that.

My father had to do more than imagine it… he had to do it when my mom left him and took us girls with her!
