This is not so far-fetched. I’ve seen quite a few people who would press the “down” button in a building lobby to go up. When asked why, they said it’s because they needed the elevator to come down to them.
I always liked one button elevators (there are some that exist), mainly because you don’t have to decide where you are going until you actually get in the thing. Waiting for the elevator changes from bored fidgeting to contemplating your destination.
On another note, next time you are waiting for an elevator, think about how odd it would be if it wasn’t the elevator that went up or down, but everything else instead, so that the elevator (and anything in it) was the only thing that didn’t move whenever someone wanted to get to another floor.
I saw a comic once, a person standing in front of a map of the campus at the College of Philosophy. The “X” on the map was labeled, “Why are you here?”
In Port of Spain, Trinidad they have the “Upside Down Hilton.” Entrance and Reservations are at the top of the mountain, and the “elevators” take you down to your room.
and what about “escalators?” escalate means increase. those things move you up or down, they don’t make you bigger. (okay, the lack of exercise might make you bigger, but it’s so gradual it should not be considered for naming purposes.)
Cavinohio: i need bifocals, written on the trash can is “Another Mans Treasure”… great strip.

Ok, space is relative, but why are they called “elevators” if half the time they’re going down?

The lower you go, the closer you are to starting to rise again.

…I suspects its because “Depressors” would just be silly.

somebodyshort - not recently, but I have read some of his work in the past (I particularly liked The Cat Who Walks Through Walls).
And also, good spotting on the trashcan, ‘another man’s treasure’ indeed!

CogentModality: In the construction trade, “elevations” are the views of the front, back and sides of buildings on the blueprints, not the floors.

We can tell you either where it is, or when it will be there, but not both at once.

Yeah, “Elevator” is only a half-truth.
I think we should refer to them as “Automated Ascending and Descending Gravitational Closets” from now on.
