Ekert: Hi! Danae, Lucy, and Kate: Uh... hi. Kate: Who are you? Danae: ...And what are you? Ekert: Ekert... and hungry! Kate: No... she meant... Ekert: Oh, I'm happy, too! Hungry and happy! Mostly hungry... But being hungry doesn't make me less happy, just that I haven't eaten in a long time, which is how I got so small, but that's OK, too... Danae: OK... I think I know why someone locked it in the shed... The mystery of the locked shed continues...

Out of all the things that could have been in that shed I was not expecting an elephant-fairy. What will it look like after it’s eaten, I wonder…?
ksoskins over 14 years ago
It’s the fabled pixie pachyderm perhaps named Ekert.

To answer a question posed here a few days ago, when I posted a link to a high resolution image of the comic ; I discovered it when the Zazzle ad to the right of the comics failed a few months ago, and Richard Thompson, creator of Cul de Sac, noticed that if you clicked on the proto-Zazzle ad, it produced a very high resolution image of his comic. Last week was the first time I tried to look for the link, but I found it this way: open up the source code for this page. Then search for “zazzle”. By about the third instance of that word, you should find code that ends in “?mime=gif”. Highlight and Copy the section of code that starts with “http” to “mime=gif”, and Paste it to your address bar.

OK, the question in MY mind at this point is WHAT is it hungry for? What do elephant-fairies eat? Wiley is one person I would never accuse of having no imagination. :)

If I were next to a creature that mentioned the word “hungry” so many times, I think I would start running :-)

chairump said,
“justin ‘nother swipe at the gop”
Huh? Where do you see a “swipe at the gop”?
TheDOCTOR over 14 years ago
There was a character on Dexters’ Laboratory, a plnk elephant with wings with Dom Deluise’s voice, that only Dexters’ sister could see or hear.

Wiley, I think chairump is thinking along the lines that the GOP’s mascot is an elephant and that the party has shrunk to a fraction of its original size.
Then again, it’s hard to understand exactly how the far right thinks, so I may be completely off base.
Wiley creator over 14 years ago
Wow. That would be quite a reach.

Far better the far right than the far left, look what it did to the Russians.

Wiley, does EVERONE who read you ‘toon have to write a comment? Is it o.k. if I just enjoy it and move on?
Your ‘toons are the best but the comments are tiresome!

Elephants eat peanuts of course as well as grass and leafy green veggies.

Wiley, I think we’ve seen this little guy/girl before, long, long, ago, but I cannot remember the context. Very cute little hefalump tho’. And the kids look awesomely flabergasted! Great art again. Thanks for the chuckle.

Eletelephony by Laura Richards
Once there was an elephant, Who tried to use the telephant- No! No I mean an elephone who tried to use the telephone. (Dear me! I am not certain, quite, That even now I’ve got it right.) Howe’re it was, he got his trunk Entangled in the telephunk; The more he tried to get it free, The louder buzzed the telephee- (I fear I’d better drop the song Of Elephop and Telephong.)

Welcome to the internet. :-)

Danae, quit frowning and saying sarcastically! Do something to feed the elephant-fairy right away. It looks very hungry.

It’s from Winnie the Pooh’s 100 Acre Woods, and yes, it is a “Hefalump”! ( Isn’t it, Wiley? Hmm?)

SHEIK: No wonder you get complements on your avatar. That’s Rudolph Valentino, the heart throb of silent movie times. And no I wasn’t around to see him. As to the tiny elephant, does he remind anyone of the Dr. Seuss book “Horton Hears the Who” character?
bobpeters61 over 14 years ago
Whatever the case is, I sense that Danae’s about to put it back in.
pawpawbear over 14 years ago
I can only hope that I can follow most of this one. I leave again for the road tomorrow and don’t always get to get online. Good thread Wiley. And as long as the comments are not personnally insulting I love them.
Reminds me of an old-fashioned barbershop.

ArthurAllen,
Not necessarily high res, but a larger version on the comic can be seen by left clicking on it. A second left click restores it.
Logicman over 14 years ago
Hey ArthurAllen – thanks for the explanation! Kinda kludgy, but it works, and it is far better than the ‘zoom click’ method I was using!
Now if we can just get past this “if it is an elephant/donkey it must refer to the GOP/Democrats” mindset. Sometimes a cigar is just a smoke after all!
Kerovan over 14 years ago
It’s entirely possible that this thing appeared in Dexter’s laboratory, but I seem to remember something like it from some kid’s story too. I can’t remember the details but I think it caused a lot of trouble. Seems like Danae has found a new partner in that sense.

Arthur Allen–How do you open up the source code to this page?
Justice22 over 14 years ago
As long as it is a good firefly elephant and doesn’t eat bunnies. I can’t tell what is in the end of it’s “trunk”.
dmw2lls over 14 years ago
I saw an old Warner Bros. cartoon about this once. I think it was called ‘Picayune Pachyderm Panics Public”, no no no that was the newspaper headline. What was it called….?
Ernest Lemmingway over 14 years ago
It’s tiny, it’s overly cheerful, it’s annoying…it’s hope! They opened Pandora’s Box–literally.
lazygrazer over 14 years ago
Wonder if Ekert is a he or she?…and what does it eat?…and how fast and big does it grow?….and is it really just a happy and hungry little cuteypie?—or is it actually an insidiously clever and insatiable monster from the pits of hell!!
Inquiring minds want to know, Wiley.

Yes “Horton Hears a Who” but someone mentioned “Heffalump” which is from “Winnie the Pooh”. So what do we have, a Heffalump, or a Who from Whoville, or something else entirely? I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE! :-)
MatureCanadian over 14 years ago
Actually, this one is neither a Heffalump or a Whoville Horton. Seems to me I remember now it might be one of the Sunday thread characters. Can’t remember all the characters off the top of my head, but the one about heaven, with the dog that changes from being a dog to a duck to a elephant fairy? Somebody help, Wiley?
