Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for October 27, 2011
Transcript:
Danae: Glop oompun, Kate! Kate: Um... what? Danae: Fliggle loopda loop. Kate: OK. What's this all about? Danae: I've created a universal language that'll lead to world peace! It's called Danaelect. Kate: Oh... that's been tried already. Danae: What?! By who? Kate: Whom. Dr. L.L. Zamenhof. He created "Esperanto" in 1887 for the same reason, but it never caught on. Danae: Just again f.y.i, zamenhof is a dirty word in Danaelect. Kate: Wow, what an instant coincidence.

Danae’s plan will not work – top linguists have already done a research paper on the subject.

I somehow figured as much, Danae.

Marklar.
digitig about 13 years ago
Coincidence indeed: Dr. Zamenhof did much the same, making the name of a previous constructed language, Volapük, the Esperanto word for nonsense/gobbledegook.

Saw that one coming but then, who didn’t?

I’m sure Dr. Zamenhof would appreciate the homage!

Piece of trivia. In 1965 “Incubus” was the first, and I believe still only, movie shot entirely in Esperanto. It starred William Shatner.

Now Bottle Nose Dolphin and Chimp. How can one talk to an exoplanet native with a different DNA, if we can not talk with these two?

Kate, how can you say Esperanto never caught on??!!! Being mentioned in Non Sequitur is a triumphant success!

Mi opinias ke Esperanto estas bona ideo, sed Anglalingvo estis tiranulo. ;-)))

Why we will never have a world language:
Polish has no vowelsHawaiian has no consonantsEnglish has no sense.

Finnish is a language with no known origins.

Love those 2 little panels in the end panel. I think Danae is “losing her touch” to her sister! :-D
Jujuesperas about 13 years ago
Thanks for knowing about Esperanto — but if millions of people have learned it and use it, can you really say “It didn’t catch on?” Maybe you should check it out! It really is a usable international language, and it’s really easy to learn.
Jujuesperas about 13 years ago
I get it — Esperanto is the answer! and it DID catch on, at least with a few million people worldwide.

is it really nice having a ‘smarty’ sister?
Brian Barker about 13 years ago
Is Esperanto a word of insult then. Probably not – yet. Their website http://www.lernu.net enjoys 125,000 hits per day :)

On the Red Dwarf, they provide instructions in English and Esperanto. But no one knows how to speak either one.
Then we have that William Shatner movie with all dialogue in Esperanto. Producer Leslie Stevens thought it was a good idea…

Back in the Cold War days, a priest used to call a friend in Moscow, and they would chat in Latin as long as they could. Once a voice came on the line, and asked why they were speaking a language not used in a member-state of the UN. The priest responded that, as far as he knew, the Vatican was still a UN member.

It should be eaple-pay, above…BTW, kali, it does seem like the spinning of the world thrust all the vowels to the south Pacific, and all the consonants to eastern Europe….Although I’m told a lot of vowels did end up in Sweden….
neil_nachum about 13 years ago
If you are slightly good with languages and interested in having friends next month in Brazil, China, Cuba and Israel Esperanto is your choice. I have used it in travels to 34 countries (where I stayed or worked for some 18 years). Try my blog at EsperantoFriends.blogspot for a diverse taste with English clarification.

As is the word “sanity” apparently… Gopful dohu gleet!
Kali39 about 13 years ago
Don’t give Danae any ideas. She already has The Church of Danae going on (and frankly, I’d like to join if I wasn’t everything she distrusts, i.e., a white male) – she doesn’t need a better name for it…
Besides Danaenetics sounds a lot better than that other thing — what’s it called, oh yea, Dying-ethics.

“Meanwhile the poor Babel fish, by effectively removing all barriers to communication between different cultures and races, has caused more and bloodier wars than anything else in the history of creation.” Take that, Zamenhof!
My own suggestion for a universal language can be found on YouTube at /watch?v=_JmA2ClUvUY . It is simple, direct, and clearly it is possible to disagree without rancor.
