Joe: I walked by a graveyard today and it made me realize something... Bob: What? Joe: That I don't really have a philosophy of life. Bob: So? Joe: So... don't you think that's sort of important? Bob: Not as important as still being able to walk past a graveyard. Joe: Good point.

@ runar from yesterday: I’m aware of what the “church” taught – and of why so many were burned at the stake or otherwise destroyed physically. People continue to do stupid and cruel things today – both religious and non-religious. Since my take on scripture (and history & culture in general) is not that it is the norm but that it is a record of our struggle to figure out life, I can deal with past stupidity and cruelty. The idea is to learn from these things.
@freeholder from yesterday: Actually, embalming became widespread during the Civil War when families wanted to bring bodies of their fallen home, but it took more than just several days.

More of us have philosophies of death rather than that of life.
StCleve72 about 12 years ago
I’ve never understood this thing about burying dead bodies. Doesn’t cremation make a lot more sense? Who wants to picture their loved ones bodies rotting away in a box? Yuck! Strange custom in my opinion. Can someone make the case for burial? It takes up a lot of good land that could be used for parks, increases the costs of disposing of the dead, etc. etc.

My father told me a story from his childhood (early 1900’s) about a young man who got a job cleaning and stocking a country store. The job would keep him busy until after sunset and he had to walk past a graveyard to get home. One night, his friends decided to play a trick on him and one of them hid behind a tombstone with a sheet over him. As the lad approached, whistling nervously, the one behind the tombstone arose with a chilling, “WOOooo!” The lad started running down the road with the “ghost” right after him. The lad ran until he was exhausted and he fell down upon a roadside bank. The “ghost” fell right beside him and said,“Boy, we had a good run, didn’t we?” The lad responded, “Yes, and by God we are going to have another as soon as I catch my breath!”

you’re probably thinking of the squared view from his back in panel 4? that’s the shape of the chair—see it in perspective in panel 2, with his shoulders sloped narrowly inside it. I wonder how much time Bob spends in that bar, anyway? that’s the only place we ever see him, isn’t it? I guess that’s a common place to hear what passes for ‘philosophy’, though…

Yep. he went where all the good atheists unfortunately go.

exoticdoc: You mean like Jesus’ words in the Bible?
freeholder1 about 12 years ago
If you’re an atheist, it makes no sense to have a philosophy of life, since you don’t believe life has any real meaning. Your world is an accident, your life is an accident and any meaning is an accident. We can pretend nihilism is a philosophy, but it’s really just lazy thinking.

I guess I have an 80’s frame of mind on this subject (at least I think it was the ’80’s)….Living on the top side is good…..anything else is a dead man’s party, and however much I would love to see some of my dearly departed family and friends…I aint leaving yet!
Varnes about 12 years ago
Freeholder, now come on, that’s just silly, If you don’t believe in a supernatural being you can’t have a philosophy of life? Ha! I laugh in your face with glee….How ‘bout this? I love everybody, and I hate hate. And I don’t need God to tell me that’s what I should do. But, as long as we’re talking about God, maybe you should pray to Her more and see what happens….

The prophesy is: ‘At the last Day, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is the Christ’.Either it happens or it does not.If it happens and you have not prepared on Earth for this event, you will have 2 emotions:1. Desire to have been prepared2. Overwhelmed at how nice your future will be
