It’s a good thing for all us British, Spanish, French, Portuguese andsubsequent followers-on that the aborigines of the Americas hadn’tgot immigration laws back in the 1400s….
Yeah, I just love it when self-proclaimed “true Americans”… i.e. 3rd generation Germans, 5th generation Irish, even 20th generation English settlers…want to keep the US from being “overrun by immigrants.”
I have a friend who has lived in N Calif since she was three…but was born in Texas to parents also born in Texas, at least one of whom could trace Texas and Arizona-born ancestors back to the civil war, in which some fought…But she looks Mexican and is bilingual in English and Spanish…Her boss recently said something to her about how something or other would be beneficial to “immigrants like you.”
Susan Sunshine. P P hit the nail on the head. You are condemning people who came here legally (like your family, no doubt) for not liking the fact that the people coming here ILLEGALLY are getting benefits for free that most of us citizens have to work all our lives to pay for and then get told that the system is bankrupt.
I think Wiley might have stimulated a bit of contrasting opinion with this ‘toon. It’ll be interesting to see where the comments go by tomorrow morning.
Why would YOU guys assume I’m talking about illegal immigrants?!
ALL “immigrants” are suspected of being illegal these days… even my friend whose ancestors were born here!
And give me a break… when many of our ancestors came here, including mine, and possibly yours, there were no “illegal” immigrants… nobody at Ellis Island saying they couldn’t come in.
The idea that immigrants, legal and illegal, are a drain on resources is a MYTH. The US government says that overall they are a benefit.
Most immigrants come here to work… the US didn’t pay the cost of their education, or childhood health care…they immediately start paying taxes and social security through payroll deductions.
In fact, illegals PAY social security but can’t claim it.
Here are a couple of websites that explain this better…sorry but it’s waay past my bedtime.
One from a non-partisan group in HoustonOne from a discussion site called RationalWiki
It’s amazing how people are willing to completely overlook the facts, or twist them to their bidding, when it comes to emotional issues like this. So what DO the numbers show about immigration and our “bankrupt” budget? Immigration, even illegal, accounts for a small number of US residents – we’re not being “run over.” The budget for immigration, both legal and illegal, is a tiny fraction of our total budget, even if you add all the social services all immigrants receive. If the budget is being busted, take a look at the military budget for the prime cause, and the “corporate welfare” Congress has set up for their buddies. Hundreds of billions wasted or not collected there. I don’t have the hard numbers yet, but I do know the proportions. As usual, the Republicrats have whipped up a frenzy of fear – “The illegals are swarming! The illegals are stealing your jobs and benefits!” Actually, the big corporations are doing that, but their flunkies have convinced you to be afraid of the dark-skinned immigrants instead of the REAL threat – our white-skinned would-be overlords. And America the Stupid is buying it! I’m ashamed to share this country with people who won’t think, won’t act, and will accept propaganda over facts and truth. Disgusted, too!
@ajnotalesThe military, all five branches, take up less than 18% of our budget. It is not the prime budget buster. I agree on stopping corporate welfare and subsidies. I would like to stop ALL welfare except for physically and mentally disabled, though can be gamed, too.Calling an illegal alien an undocumented worker is like calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist.
Modern economies are like pyramid schemes; in countries with declining populations, if you don’t have younger workers in the form of immigrants, you have no one paying the taxes which support the needs of an aging and, often, non-working population.
This is simply NOT a matter of arguing who is right. This is a natural course of history that you can adjust some but not substantially change. And way too many Americans (and British and French) are on the wrong side of history.
When you’re on the wrong side of history, you adjust your worldview and see how you’ll make the best of it. The reality, no matter how much you might want it otherwise, is that (1) there are huge reasons for people to get the heck out of where they may be, even if it requires the terrifying abandonment of home, and (2) global transportation and information access being what it is and will increasingly be, there is no practical way to stop the traffic. That’s your world. Pretending you can make it not so is both foolish and counterproductive.
It’s abundantly clear that nearly all the objection that is presented as economic is actually fear of other cultures. Well folks, cultures change. The culture of the US will change. Denying that demonstrates a combination of ignorance and self-delusion. And you will inevitably be left behind, angry and confused, but left behind nevertheless.
Get real. Face up. Get with history. Forget walls, fences, and border guards. They will never work. And learn to enjoy the ride. One hundred years from now, today’s immigrants will be honored for their fortitude and contributions. For now, you have more and enough to do working on how to maker the most of your changing world.
bwillett: So you think that coming without papers and shooting anyone who defended their land was legal? Or only those with pale skin, thin lips, and a lot of body hair?,Sharuniboy: I know what you mean. Most of my gene pool blew over in the 18th century, but most of my American ancestors go back to those who walked and/or paddled over. We have no oral history in my family before the 1880s. It was the only way to keep peace in the family because in the first half of the 1860s, they were not only on both sides of the war, but on at least two occasions, both sides in the same battle.
One hundred years from now, if things keep going as they are, folks will be going “blub, blub” from the rising oceans or freezing, or frying, or succumbing from little plastic bits in our water or starvation brought on by drought or lack of bees to pollinate plants, or . . .
OMG!!Looks like the Arizona border. But, they don’t need to look like a cactus, just have him turn his back. Unless, they shoot him again, on his last day of work!!
Seems to me that a certain well known once got in a heap of trouble for hiring an illegal as a maid…..and now if you DON’T hire illegals you get in trouble…what gives?
PP: have you checked the immigration laws when your grandparents came? They were healthy spend two years living as law-abiding people and were then eligible for citizenship. I’m quite sure that a great majority of those you resent would be citizens today if the requirements for citizenship were the same today as they were then.
There were Germans who tried to flee Germany when Hitler came to power. Unfortunately they were turned away and had to return to their country to get murdered. Hitler I hope you burn in hell and fry.
That poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty celebrates the U.S. immigration policy that allowed anyone from anywhere to enter the country with or without documents. A significant number of those immigrants were what we would now call “economic immigrants” or, in common parlance, “illegals.”As for that southwest border pictured in the comic; during most of that time everything to the south and west of Colorado was Mexico. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ceded that territory to the U.S. (under duress, of course) guaranteed the inhabitants the right to maintain their language and culture…but it was broken rather quickly like most of the treaties with the Indians.

So funny for people to that "2nd generation Germans are complaining we’ll be over run by immigrants’
That isn’t true by any means. What is being said is that we will be over run by ILLEGAL immigrants. Big difference.
Let them get in line and wait for a visa like my grandparents did. No cutting in line.
