Rambling on with Bernie and Phil... Bernie: Madison Bumgarner. Phil: Who's that? Bernie: A pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. Phil: Ok...what about him? Bernie: I just like his name...it reminds me of the great old names in baseball lore, like Yogi Berra...cookie Lavagetto...Van Lingle Mungo...Rocky Marciano... Phil: Uh...Marciano was a boxer. Bernie: Oh. Right. Whatever happened to boxing? It was so popular back in our day... Phil: I dunno. But what does any of this have to do with what we were talking about? Bernie: What were we talking about? Phil: Hmm...let's see...ebola?...Religion?...The upcoming campaigns for President...? ...It was something toxic. Bernie: Well, then let's just stay in the sports section.

That’s what I try and do. Was with one cohort on Friday blaming everything on Republicans, the next morning a cohort was blaming it all on Democrats. Different topics, same bipartisan….

I blame the Detroit Lions. It’s all their faults!

These days, the sports section seems pretty toxic, too…

DA BEARS!

As a Steeler fan I have to say that I feel for the Lions. …and the City of Detroit. Doesn’t seem that either can even buy a break.
QuiteDragon about 10 years ago
Well, talking about sports, anyway. And watching them. Except maybe a baseball game on a warm summer evening, from the bleachers. Only thing is, the fun from that is now spoiled with all the antics that merely serve to distract from the game.

This Canadian lady is pulling for the Montreal Alouettes in the Grey Cup and hoping the Montreal Canadiens keep playing well. Even though I moved to Ontario 20 years ago, I just can’t cheer for the Argos, the Ti-Cats or the Maple Leafs.

You can ignore politics, but politics won’t ignore you, Wiley.

Statler & Waldorf arguing about sports, instead of heckling The Muppets.
@Greatwizzo: The Bears suck & will continue to suck as long as that idiot family owns them!

can’t do the sports section anymore. domestic abuse, cops covering up assaults, schools having sham classes, even horse trainers sabotaging their own stable. the sports channels are just terrible.

Lots of Bumgarner’s around where Madison is from. While I was pulling for the Royals, I have to admit it was exciting to have a local guy do well.

I’d like to point out that this cartoon was done before the World Series. Quite serendipitous that Bumgarnern was named the series MVP!

Sports are a waste of sweat, wait that is waste!?

Athletics is the ultimate meritocracy in which you can only enjoy success by earning it. No wonder so many people don’t like sports…not everybody “wins.”
dabugger about 10 years ago
Yeah, better there.
Godfreydaniel about 10 years ago
Anybody who knows anything about sports laughs at the idea that it is a strict meritocracy. Losing coaches and managers are recycled ALL the time. Coaches and managers have their pets and their doghouses—neither tend to be rationally based on merit. Take a look at anybody who signs a big long-term contract: his production won’t always plummet but frequently will be far less than his agent told the owner it would be. (And don’t get me started on agents!)

Louisiana once had a lieutenant governor who boxed for LSU in the 1950’s, back when boxing was sanctioned by the NCAA. Is that a political subject or sports subject?

Thanks Doc! Van Lingle Mungo!!

Well, looks like Wiley has dropped another level in my eyes — not a mention of Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp, or Yasiel Puig. (Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, or even Gil Hodges…)

What was it Keith Olbermann used to say when he was doing sports for an LA TV station? “In the department store of life, sports is the toy department.”
Ernest Lemmingway about 10 years ago
If what I have to listen to at work is any indication, sports can be just as toxic as anything else.

Wiley, after the rock-‘em-sock-’em week just past, kudos on a nice peaceful Sunday.

I have a theory that boxing fell out of favor because of all the fixes, falls, and fakery. But the continued success of wrestling is proof that the theory is wrong.

I’m from KC, and I don’t care much for Bumgarner.
