During the Black Death… there was a little isolated area. They had very little contact with the outside world. Somehow they got word that the Bubonic Plague was going on. So… they tightened up their area to keep the illness away from catching it. They took precautions like we would. But… some people slip up. A cloth sales person made a distance sale with one of these people. Money was left in a spot… exchanged was the cloth. Social Distancing at its best. But… as most know… it wasn’t those invisible demons that float in the air (that we know as germs) that caused the Black Death. It was caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Basically a pest inside another pest (flea). Sadly… the cloth was loaded with these infected fleas. The isolated area got devastated.
Who knows what the results would have been if they had better communication such as Social Media. (Slaps forehead) What am I thinking! We Have That Situation! And… yes… it had dumbed-down the population. People don’t want to believe the cloth is infected with an illness. We live the perfect life… no one is going to get sick… Right?
There is generally nothing social about social media. It is more Ant-social media. Just spend 5 minutes on Twitter or Parler or Facebook and you will get enough toxic posts, comments and feedback to last you 3 lifetimes.
Facebook was " invented " by Suckerberg so he could meet girls because he was too socially inept to meet them in person. And it’s been down hill ever since
It’s more about empathy than stupidity. Some believe, and work towards, giving everyone a chance and trying to make the world a better place. Others see a rat race in which road-kill only enhances their own position. Each side works with mixed intelligence at attaining their goals.
Not only do we have social media, folks, we have psychologists and others doing a freudian thing and examining/discussing/arguing the pros and cons of such. . .November issue of Smithsonian had a two page article on “selfies.” Some say they are the height of “grand narcissism;” others claim that selfies are a perfectly healthy way of exploring ourselves. The article had two other tidbits of information that I found intriguing: the first “selfie” craze occurred with the discovery/creation of mirrors (earliest ones were of polished obsidian circa 6200 B.C.), AND that plastic surgery, particularly around the eyes, has become the newest beauty “craze.” Why? Because people don’t like how they look on ZOOM and/or wearing masks. . .
I remember when post cards were about as close to “social media” as you could get. Sharing pictures meant a slide show and home movies. …sigh. Who would have thought those were the “good old days”?
Yeah, there has always been countless stupid people, but finding and affirming each other on the internet just makes them more ignorant of their stupidity. Plus, makes them more visible to the non-stupid public, too.
I have found that social media has ups as well as downs. I’ve found groups for all kinds of scientific interests as well as great pictures of nature (One site, Octonation, has amazing short films of octopuses.).

I’ve been around far longer than social media. People were idiots before it. Now, they just have a platform to be higher profile about it.

I love social media. It helps me stay in touch with people I miss from my old hometown.

There’s no social media in my world. There’s also very few people I’ve ever met worthwhile of resuming contact.

“Social media” used to be talking loudly in a bar, and letting everyone know how stupid you were.

Social media or anti-social media? As soon as the hammer was invented to drive nails someone used it to hit his neighbor.
