I still remember in first grade, a kid missed a day and brought a note, which the teacher read out loud in anger: “Please excuse Scott’s absence from school yesterday. He got his hair cut and went to a birthday party.”
Which kind of means that a whole bunch of other kids skipped school to go to the party, now that I think about it.
Cute. Not only did I never get my birthday off from school. it was the day each school year began. Also, come to think of it, the day my favorite local kids’ TV show ended…
When I was a kid we were happy to go to school on our birthday because we got to bring candy or gum or cupcakes or something else to hand out to our classmates. I guess nowadays they’d only let you bring sealed packs of granola or something.
If Schroeder was at my old school, that would be a wise decision. They threw rotten eggs and pee to whoever had a birthday. Thank goodness mine falls during summer vacations.
I always take my birthday off from work, but I only got it off from school when it was on the weekend or the Thanksgiving Holiday (which means I got my birthday off from school quite a lot).

Actually, it’s César Cui’s, Alexis-Emmanuel Chabrier’s, Bernthold Goldschmidt’s, Gábor Darvas’, Juan Orrego’s, Thierry Pallesco’s, and Alla Penkina’s birthdays. Source: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~benhdj/Music/Composers/Birth/Jan.html

My younger daughter’s birthday always lands during February vacation. She hates that she can’t spend her birthday at school.

I’m impressed with Charlie Brown’s knowledge of classical composers.

An odd spelling of the composer Tchaikovsky’s name, but one seen more in the era in which Charles Schulz created this cartoon.
