When my son was about 1, he refused to walk on his own. If you let his hand go, he just sat down. I used to hand him the end of a towel and walk with him holding the other end. If either of us let it go, he would sit down. This went on until he was about 14 months old.
We taught our girls that they had to hold my hand when crossing streets or parking lots until they were taller than me (I’m only 5’ tall, so it’s a low bar). My younger daughter, who is 17 and 5’5", STILL likes to hold my hand. Funny thing is, the #1 song the year I as born was “I Want To Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles…her favorite band!
Younger readers may not recognize the text in Charlie Brown’s thought balloon in panel 2 as a play on a mid-20th-century road safety slogan, “Drive carefully. The life you save may be your own.” (A year or two later, the author Flannery O’Connor published a short story titled “The Life You Save May Be Your Own.”)

I’m sure Lucy feels better about it, but technically she’s on a leash: https://www.etymonline.com/word/leash

Do they even still make mittens on a string? I remember wearing them back in the day.

What if it was Schroeder, Lucy? Would you accept his offer to hold hands while walking across the street?

Considering it’s Lucy, Chuck ought to be relieved he doesn’t have to hold her hand.

Idiot mittens.

Back in the day, a boy could cross the street alone but a girl needed escorting.

Maybe someone should’ve asked Schroeder to help her cross the street. On the other hand, (sorry!), he may have balked at holding hands, too…
