It’s fascinating to see how much this strip changed over the years. Linus becomes a pacifist, but at this time, he was a naughty little brother with ‘attitude’.
These strips ran at a time (mid ’50’s ? They referenced the Davy Crockett craze earlier and that was 1955) when there were many Western shows and cop shows on TV. Most kids were playing “Cowboys and Indians” or “Cops and Robbers.” It was a whole different world indeed. (I wish these gave the original date, as t he classic “Nancy” strips do. )
This strip is from November 8, 1955. Most of the strips on Peanuts Begins carry a month/day indicator. Today’s is 11/8.
GoComics does not skip around like Larson’s “Far Side.” So tomorrow’s strip will be 11/9 and you can assume the year is 1955 for the next month or so unless they return to the beginning of the series. (Good old Charlie Brown. How I hate him.) The previous run of “Peanuts Begins” returned to the beginning in 2018 after they ran an August 1954 strip. We are now close to the end of 1955, which is farther than GC has run “Peanuts Begins” in the past.
Regarding the time, playing with toy guns was almost universal. And my parents, who were as anti-smoking as you can be, put candy cigarettes in my Christmas stocking. It was definitely a different world.

Linus is a byproduct of the times. But no kid would say what he said.
