I always hated those. Some kids got to show off about their long trips or their summer at some exclusive riding camp or whatever. Me? “I worked in the vegetable garden, cleaned house, and read books.” Someone would always ask, “didn’t you do anything?”
A good teacher might actually want to know what each kid did during the break, especially if it’s a new class for them. Could be quite useful to assess who is having problems or whether they are highly imaginative. Or if they’ve entirely forgotten how to string a sentence together.
My summer after 3rd & 7th grade were spent in the hospital for 8 weeks after I had surgery on both legs. My muscles hadatrophied & got so tight I could not straighten my legs enoughto lock my braces! I also got new braces after 8th grade!
Like Orinoco Womble above, it was embarrassing to me to have to write that I read books or visited my grandmother, while other kids went to Europe or Florida or Carlsbad Caverns. I bugged my parents for years to take us on a real vacation. We finally went to Washington DC, but by that time, I was a pre-teen and no longer forced to write “What I did on my Summer Vacation”. (But still young enough to ONLY be interested in the hotel pool). LOL
Isn’t it interesting that most of us can state what we did on our summer vacation in two sentences or less and yet we had to write two pages? It was hard for me to extend working on a farm and running in the woods to two paragraphs let alone two pages. Maybe that is how the teachers try to develop creative writing in their students but clever lies developed instead?
My son wrote about one of the things he did during the summer: flew to McDonald’s for lunch.
The teacher called us in with concerns about my son’s overly active imagination and that the assignment was supposed to be about something he actually did.
I hated to let the air out of her bubble, but we actually did fly to a small airport with a McDonald’s right outside the fence where you parked the planes. It was called Tew-Mac: the Tweksbury-McDonald’s airport. According to Google Maps, it’s part of a golf course now.
When I was a kid, my mother said the Same Words to us every Morning:“Why don’t you kids go to the Pool…”.We lived a 5 minute walk from the City Pool complex with room for 400 to 500 Kids at a time..Kids from neighborhoods too far to walk came in on School Buses that were mostly Idle anyway in the summer…

Let’s see… what did I do this summer?
When did summer begin, anyway? I’m pretty sure I did the same thing all summer I’m doing right now…

Even a dumb teacher would realize he’s being sarcastic, and he’d get a bad grade on the assignment whether he deserved it or not.
