I think Schulz is poking fun at Santa Rosa, California, where he lived when this was drawn (1973)… and until he passed away.
So did I, and still do…. not that I ever met him.
At that time, Santa Rosa had only about 50 thousand residents, but as you approached on the 101 freeway, which he would have done often, a sign said “Next 9 Exits.”
We all thought that was funny.
I guess we needed them, though, because the town does stretch somewhat “vertically” along the freeway, which is still the only direct North/South route through it….
though now it’s more like 180,000 people…. and I think 11 exits.
Apparently we only needed two more for the next 130,000 people.
It’s like the approaches to Gettysburg PA from the north. the road curves around the town and you have to know which exit you want for the town, the college or the battlefield.
….followed a right turn at the first light, then drive down 5 blocks and make a left. Drive over the train tracks and make a sharp right turn. Woodstock’s nest is on the tree 3rd house to your left
I drive in Pennsylvania and I often pass a sign saying “Endless Mountains Region: Next 6 Exits.” I always think, “If it’s the Endless Mountains, shouldn’t it be ‘Next ∞ exits’”?

Someone has been flying around the freeways near large cities it seems. And here I thought that Woodstock had trouble flying.

I came upon a dog of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me
I’m going on down to Woodstock’s nest
I’m going to join in a rock ‘n’ roll band
