’Tis the season. I love the kite-eating tree. One time you could hear “chomp chomp chomp.” And once Lucy ? looked up when Charlie Brown told her not to, and was traumatized. Some very funny strips from this “character.”
Up north where I live it still happens to be WINTER.I guess I’m not lucky like Charlie Brown and his kite to be living in southern California or Florida where it looks like it is already summer for him!
Starting the arc with Charlie Brown after being accused of eating a Kite Eating Tree runs away and meets up with 4 kids (Austin, Ruby, Leland, and Milo) and tries to start his own baseball team with them.
How abt threatening the tree with a saw or an axe? He could take his sister or Linus with him as his Official Axe/Saw Carrier and perhaps that kite eating tree would be cowtailed to become less aggressive.
I hadn’t thought about it before, but the Peanuts community reminds me of my home life when I was a boy in Camden. We lived there for 4 years. The backyards were open, no fences, and they converged on one very good kite eating tree. But, that tree never ate one of my kites. But, the clothes lines were the biggest problem. No dryers then.
your heart’s too big to stay mad at a poor hungry kite-eating tree. especially when it’s gone all winter without eating anything. it’s okay Charlie, show your compassion.
My thought has always been CB should try a different kind of kite. Diamonds are really hard to get to fly right. A flare or sled would’ve worked better. ‘Course that wouldn’t be funny.

Definitely a box kite – much more nutritious and filling. Those wimpy kites are just appetizers.

Box kite = box lunch.

One traditional kite, lightly salted, with a bit of sweet sauce, hold the dressing. And a fresh water from France to drink.

If it’s always the same tree, Chuckles—try flying your kite in a different area.

In today’s Cleats strip, Bertha bought a Japanese kite that can withstand kite-eating trees. Maybe Charlie Brown should get one of those.

In Japan they had kites called a wanwan-dako. It was about 75 feet wide, weighed just under 3 tons, & required 150-200 men to fly it.

By this point, the Peanuts daily strips take on a slightly different look up until 1988. The lettering is noticeably larger.
