Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for March 01, 2012
Transcript:
Pig: Hey, Goat... I'd like you to meet my pals, Timmy and Tina Turtle. Timmy died ten years ago, but Tina still carried her dead husband's shell on her back. Goat: Aww. How sad. Turtle: Best ten years of marriage we've ever had. Goat: Never mind. Turtle: So, Timmy... where do you want to go for dinner? Oh, yeah... you don't have a say.

This strip made me wonder is Stephan is married. (He is, in case anyone else was wondering.)

It would appear that Tina is carrying a grudge. For tenTimmy-laden years. And loving every minute of it! Ouch!

That’s funny, I thought Turtles lived in the sea. It looks more like a Tortoise to me ‘cos it doesn’t have the bigger webbed feet of a Turtle.

You think she could be a snapper?

Seems like Stephan’s strip follows a random stream of consciousness at times. These strips really make me wonder who the model for the character is and what context he encountered them in.

I’ve been a widow for 8 years now, and I created an account just so I could make the following comment:
This is the FUNNIEST thing I’ve seen in a long time. It had me snorting coffee out my nose because I wasn’t expecting it. I wouldn’t have laughed in the first year or two of widowhood, when everything is all about “What would my darling husband do?” But, the man is dead and gone — I loved him to pieces, but he no longer has a say in how I run the household. This strip is so funny, and so accurate!
P.S. — I’ve moved a few times and am still hauling around shells of his life with me. Love this strip, love it love it..

Well, marriage is always a balancing act.

My aunt was married to an extremely controlling man – abusive in many ways. He died first, and her remaining years were some of the most joyful she experienced. Her daughters were so thankful that their mom got to enjoy life. Maybe Timmy was the abusive one, and Tina is finally able to do things she would like to do. Not everyone gets a divorce even when the situation is horrible.

Are they related to Toby, the agoraphobic binge-drinking turtle? If Tina was Toby’s sister, it’s no wonder Toby won’t come out of his shell!
@ HippyChippy: The fact that you spent that much time looking at the turtles and deciding that seriously disturbs me…

This reminds me of what happened in Japan a short while back. They found people who had the dead bodies of grandparents in their apartment, and some had them in backpacks and carried them around with them. That way they would still get the social assistance for their elderly grandparents.
