Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for December 30, 2012
Transcript:
Pig: Hey there, goat...how's it going? Goat: Good. I'm meeting my friend, coach Bob. He's an offensive coordinator for a footbal team. Pig: Oh, he must love that. Goat: Usually. But right now, the team is scoring no points, and he's taking a whole lot of heat for the lack of offense. Pig: Really? Goat: Yep. So if you don't mind, don't bring it up. Don't even hint at it...oh, here he is now. Pig: Nice to meet you, Couch Bob! Let me buy you a coffee. But don't get the french roast. It tastes terrible. Coach Bob: What are you talking about? I love their french roast. Pig: Oh, no offense. *crack* Pig: He took offense.

Take my team’s job, we scored a maximum of under 100 points this season.

Testy sort, isn’t he?

Now that’s an offensive coordinator.
legaleagle48 almost 12 years ago
That’s probably the most subtle pun Stephan has done this year!
Proginoskes almost 12 years ago
What? The punchline wasn’t “the best defense is a good offence”?
Varnes almost 12 years ago
Proginoskes, No, in this case, I think it’s “No defense is the best offense….” Pig had no defense, and that helped Bob’s offense a lot……..
Sisyphos almost 12 years ago
Coach Bob is just doing his job: mustering the best offense he can. Of course, playing against Pig really makes his game look better….
jeff_e almost 12 years ago
Coach Bob should go for the decaf.
Dave Thorby almost 12 years ago
Coach Bob’s team should employ Rat – he’s the most offensive character in the strip!
eddie6192 almost 12 years ago
That dumb Pig can’t complain that he wasn’t warned.

If we could still rate strips, I’d give this the lowest, and I love the wordplay strips. To me, the two words don’t sound the same at all and there’s no way any coach, from anywhere, no matter how rural, backward, or television-free, would confuse the two. … just my opinion.

“Pearls” operates under an unusual legal code.Apparently, a person can – without fear of arrest, prosecution or even litigation – walk up to Pig and kick him, club him, or punch him in the face anytime.
GoodQuestion Premium Member almost 12 years ago
That’s a 5 yard offense – punching out the pig-skin . . . ☻
tuna1 almost 12 years ago
You sure his name is Coach Bob? Looks more like Mike Tice..
boogshine almost 12 years ago
Ouch. This implies that Coach Bob pronounces offense like someone unfamiliar with football. They call it AW-fence, Pastis, not uh-FENCE. Ah well, good effort.

Does anyone know where Pastis lives so I can knock some sense into him when it comes to really bad puns
Logical Duck almost 12 years ago
I thought Pig was going to reveal that he thought Bob’s back yard was open plan, and his neighbor had frequent bonfires. So Bob took a lot of heat for the lack of a fence..
singlefemalelaywer almost 12 years ago
Offence taken…….
imbaldeagle almost 12 years ago
Well you can’t really blame coach Bob. He’s probably been a croc in previous lives and has anger issues based on being killed so many times. You’d probably take offense too.
Hectoruno almost 12 years ago
@CorzakAs opposed to our legal code where someone can slit pig’s thoat and than cook and eat him.
yolojudge23 almost 12 years ago
i get it he is standing up for thier french roast and hes gonna put him on the team

@packratjohn:) I really shouldn’t lay the hate on a strip I like so much. After all, I didn’t actually hear what Pig said. …Maybe his subconscious did him in with a substitution. (I’m also weakening on the coach’s familiarity with certain words.) [grumble, grumble…]
Hank The Sock almost 12 years ago
Poor Pig… I think he get’s abused a bit too much :(

Thank you Steve for making it easy for me to change “Bob” to “Todd” for all of my Steeler friends!!!
skydancer11 almost 12 years ago
Where does Pastis pick up all these profound puns?

No offense.
