They can at least take comfort in the fact that their arch rival lost in the Rose Bowl.

The UC Santa Cruz Slugs don’t even have a football team! But they’re still the best partiers.

I feel the same way. My alma mater finished with worst record in years after winning two national championships within the last 7 years. I can’t even type their name, G8rs. :-(

Cheer up Steph…Surely the worm will turn someday. You could always take heart in the failures of Cal’s rivals – when they have them.

Well, my first year in college, my team went 0-11; this year they’re going for their 3rd National Championship. Not bad for a school that used to be the “girls school” in Florida.

So, I know how Pastis feels…I feel your pain.

Worse, the graduation rate for Cal’s football and basketball players is precisely last among the 72 major intercollegiate programs. Folks used to blame neighboring Stanford’s poor athletic prowess on its high academic standards. Cal can’t even use that excuse. Shame on the Golden Bears.

We all should know the CAL football mantra by now: “There’s always next year!” Plus Football is great but an A-class University is greater!

Uh, given college sports are as bad as professional sports when it comes to rivalries, Goat’s comment is rather of a poor nature concerning grown adults. Actually, high school sports can be as bad when it comes to rivalries and adults. I have an uncle in his ‘60s or early 70’s now. Every Thanksgiving we’d go to his place and he’d be listening to the game of the local high school rivalry. Very big deal, he and a friend of his would root for their team and then call each other up on the phone in the middle of the game and after to rub it in their face over what was going on in the game and when the game was over. And he was in his 50s and 60s when this was happening. I’ve heard they still do it.

Just to note that in most of the rest of the world, no-one much cares or even knows how their own college sports teams are doing, even when they’re at college, let alone 30 years later…
