I’d let my golden into the backyard before bed, but she’d never come in when called. If I went out, she couldn’t “hear” me unless I could see her. Sneaky brat.
Kids and dogs have similar hearing. There is a buffer that prevents trouble from getting through until they are forced to look at it. Somehow the eyes make the ears work.

get a dog whistle, Chaz, and see if that will get Poncho’s (and his pals’) attention

That’s not the frequency range to get the attention of your dog, Chaz!

Reminds me of the Far Side cartoon where a guy is chewing out his dog for getting into the trash:
What we say to dogs: “Bad dog, Ginger! I told you to stay out of the garbage! You hear me, Ginger? Stay out of the garbage, Ginger!…”
What dogs hear: “Blah blah blah Ginger! Blah blah blah blah blah blah Ginger! Blah blah blah Ginger!…”

The ears switch off when the nose is working. Apparently.

My dad used to call this selective hearing.
