So, Mom, you want Teena to be like Jeri? Why? You’ve already got a Jeri. Let Teena be who she is, and stop trying to cram her into some standardized “girl” box.
Her mother’s trouser/top combination is hardly a good example of femininity… but she knows she looks (and feels) good in it, so why undermine her daughter’s confidence?
One of the more common fights I have with my mom is over clothing.[]Not only is mom constantly getting new clothes for herself, she’s also constantly trying to get new clothes for others. []Thing is, no matter how often I tell her what sizes I take, she almost always gets me things that don’t fit… and then promptly gets offended when I tell her so without even trying it on. (I’m a 44 waist; there’s no way a 50 is going to fit me.)

My daughters – particularly my older, 10-year-old – LOVE to wear dresses.

Look in a mirror, mom. A plain top, and straight slacks. Teena is learning by example. Don’t try to turn her into a Shirley Temple.

Besides, Teena’s too old for “Toddlers and Tiaras.”

Sometimes you gotta prod a kid into trying something new. Then step back and let them discover for themselves.
