I felt a bit like that when I was a volunteer in a fourth grade classroom. It was pretty clear from the homework that three of the kids had no idea what the two parts of a fraction represented. I came up with a range of activities to help them get the concept, and they definitely made some progress, but there were Jeri moments along the way.
