It’s apparent Scott read the Wikipedia entry for Guam before the blackout.

The natives can call it “Steve” if they want, but the world is full of places that have names given to them by non-natives, such as “North America.”

I always try to point out that Montezuma is wrong, but have been foiled when told that many names are wrong.

“Peking” is now “Beijing”, “Burma” is now “Myanmar”, “Bombay” is now “Mumbai”…

If those who live there want the “official” name to reflect what they themselves call it rather than what a bunch of outsiders decided to call it, more power to them.

“exonym” sounds like a fine name.

Anybody know the English names for Suomi, Magyarország, Shqipëria, or Nihon? The Finns, Hungarians, Albanians, Japanese, Guamese, or anyone else can call themselves anything they want, but they don’t have the right to change English.

(Too bad we gave up on Ceylon and Formosa.)
