Actually, I think Nate’s doodling. You’ll notice Chad also has a little notepad on the ground near him, suggesting that they both were doodling (which makes sense, considering they’re both Doodlers).Not only that, in the first panel you don’t see Nate at all, and the second panel is the only panel in which he’s holding the notebook, which implies that he was doodling prior to Francis’s explanation of evolution, and then put it down because….well, I guess the concept was actually something interesting for once? I dunno why he’s listening so well, either. But he’s definitely not taking notes. That would just be strange.
Actually, there have been a few strips in which he tells his father that he’s going over to Teddy’s house to play Xbox. I’m guessing the reason he doesn’t play that much though is because Marty is…well, Marty, and won’t spend the money to get a system. =/
