I call the attendant before the second time I’m talking back to the thing. And I try to laugh at the whole mess instead of getting upset. However….most of the stores here open only one or two cashier checkouts, which get long lines. One store does that, plus all the self-checks are 10 items or less!!! I go there as seldom as possible.
I avoid self-checks because people need jobs, not robots. One time I broke my rule and went to a self-check at CVS. I paid cash. It gave me my 60 cents change in pennies. I then had to go to the cashier to get them changed to usable money. No more self-checks.
I rarely use them, but the nagging about the bag makes me want to bash it. They put a couple in at COSTCO and it was nice because I just had a box of coffee pods and didn’t have to wait in line behind someone with 3 shopping carts filled to the brim.
Am I missing something by having used well-functioning self-checkouts in Europe and not any in the US? Does really everything just work better anywhere else?
I support workers and refuse to use a self checkout. One of the local drug store chains (Shoppers) went with all but one self checkouts. Gonna lose me as a customer.. not that they care.
Walmart has that disabled now. Instead they have an employee stand there and watch everybody. If they’re going to do that, why don’t they just hire people to run registers like stores used to? I guess the idea is that one person can supervise the entire self-check area instead of only running a single line. I wonder if I could get a job as a Walmart self-check watcher? Hey, I sound like an Andy Rooney commentary.
Check out technology is getting better and better. Employees are expensive. Corporate box stores want to have as few employees as possible. As soon as foolproof check out technology arrives all stores will implement it and a human checker won’t even be an option.
No self checks up here. But when I did live in a city that had self checks I would always pay myself with a steak or three. If the store is not going to pay me for my work then I will pay myself.
Once in awhile at our local store – when I do use the self checkout. There is a button I tap for ‘your own bags’. I’m going along doing fine and then the screen will pop-up – Are you using your own bags? Didn’t I already tell it yes? It doesn’t always seem to remember that I said ‘I was’. Why have the function, if it is going to forget while you are scanning. The attendant then has to come over and ‘unlock’ the screen.
I used those darned things 2 times and had problems ,then had to wait at customer service for 10 minutes for a person to make things straight. They usually have people standing there to help you so why not just put them on an empty register in the first place. I refuse to use them now!!

Doesn’t anyone use the self-scanners, on the trolley, before you put the item directly into your bag ?

I use the self-checkout at Walmart most of the time. I have very few problems and I don’t have to wait in line..

The price of every item in the store includes money to pay the cashiers. If I check myself out, I’m just giving the store free money…

No thanks! I have enough happening than to be aggravated by a checkout-Siri!

The day the store gives me a significant discount for doing their job for them is the day I’ll use self-checkout.

First thing I do at a self checkout is turn the sound off. Problem solved, no more nagging.

Self-scanners are not there for your convenience; they’re there to put people out of work. Don’t use them!

With me it’s usually telling me the opposite, i.e., to scan the item I just put in the bag when I have indeed just scanned it!

Sounds like the self check-outs at my local grocery store.
