The winning is in the running, the competition, playing the game – and … especially in their case – the companionship.

If I ever win a race with my dogs it is because they let me.

That bus, that bus, it’s my old school bus. # 2 for Deerpath school in Lake Forest! The one we threw the broom out of. Tee hee! Funny now! Not so much to the owner of the car.

I had a cat who would race me the last fifty yards across a clearing between the woods and the house. He would always give me a head start but he would always be waiting in the garden, calmly grooming when I got there.

I had one cat who was a lap cat. I had another cat at the same time who would slowly prowl around my chair in a circle, always in the same direction. It was some time before I realized he was a “laps cat”.

When I was young, I knew a girl who could run fast. And I do mean FAST!! On sports day, she was the start of the tracks. She had one minor thing though, she HAD to be barefoot or it just wouldn’t work. The teachers didn’t mind as it was always fair weather during those days.

Today’s strip and the reference to “bragging rights” reminded me of an on-line quiz about “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. With regard to Brom Bones’s alleged race with the Headless Horseman, one question asked what the winner would have got and one possible answer was “The bragging rights”.

According to Brom, he was unable to collect on the bet as the Headless Horseman disappeared as they approached the Old Church Bridge.
