They use the phrase ‘helicopter mother’ to talk about the mother who can’t let her kid alone; how come there’s no phrase for the father who keeps thinking he can give his kid a decent haircut but can’t…
My mother used to cut our hair (2 boys and 3 girls). While the boys were always okay with their cuts, she would “pixie-cut” the girls at the start of each summer because she didn’t want to deal with long hair. In 7th grade, my older brother (1 year ahead of me) and I happened to wear the same color for picture day. My Grandmother wrote back and asked my mother who was whom. I swore I would never cut my hair again and when summer came I raised holy heck until she relented and let me have my hair. Both my sisters then piped up and said if I didn’t have to get a haircut, neither did they. Fast forward 50 years and I currently have waist-length hair, although I do get it all cut off about every 2-3 years to donate it.
Ever since I was made redundant a few years back, I have been struggling to find work. Since then I have not been able to go to the salon as much. As a result, my hair grew all the way down my back, longer than ever before. When I finally landed a temp job, I was able to reunite with my stylist for a relaxer and cut. I prefer a short ponytail, and he even advised me to never let my hair grow that long again. I wash my hair at home, but I guess as time went on, my split ends had split ends with split ends.
