It’s making me think of Charles Williams’ picture of hell in a character’s dreams: the man climbing down a cliff face on a rope while skulls nip at his feet. Here, a skull appears to be biting the squirrel’s tail.
Hmm, “squirrel skull." There could be a reason the cartoonist chose a squirrel as the animal to be tormented. Not, for instance, the deer or that horrible cat.
