Working as a teller, had an old man come to my window. It was the kind where there were little windows that swung open only just so far. He’d had garlic for lunch and I had to step back to catch my breath. Still remember that to this day
When I was working, 50 years ago, there was an outstanding Chinese restaurant within walking distance and immediately next door to the bank we all used. Thus, on payday we’d go as a group for the lunch special, then walk next door to deposit our checks. They had a really savory version of Pork in Garlic Sauce that I enjoyed one day. When I went to the teller with my check, she looked up, smiled, and said, “Oh, you ate next door today.” She also frequently enjoyed their savory dishes. The trick with garlic is to be sure that everybody has some.
I have a recipe for a very pungent garlic bread, which is with cheese spread, lots of garlic, parsley. That mixed and spread on French bread, with smoked salted ham or beef over it. Then wrapped in aluminum foil in the oven. I used to only make it whenever we didn’t expect company or go to visit for at least two days. But now I don’t bother with that and just make it whenever we feel like it.
It’s making me think of Charles Williams’ picture of hell in a character’s dreams: the man climbing down a cliff face on a rope while skulls nip at his feet. Here, a skull appears to be biting the squirrel’s tail.
Hmm, “squirrel skull." There could be a reason the cartoonist chose a squirrel as the animal to be tormented. Not, for instance, the deer or that horrible cat.
The green skulls denoting “garlic breath” is one of my favorite Rose is Rose memes. My favorite quote regarding them is also from Don and Pat: Garlic breath is lovely when everyone has it.
My husband is Italian. In his family the worst thing one could do was smell of garlic. It is to be used very sparingly. (Okay, maybe opening a jar of “tomato sauce” instead of making proper “tomato gravy” – with the smallest bit of garlic – was worse.)

How rude of Jimbo. “Vicki” is guilty of it, too.
