There is a technical definition of myth quite apart from the popular usage of the word. Taught a political science class one time… Reading the first chapter it promised to use the technical definition of the term myth in analyzing political perceptions. I was tremendously excited about the textbook – until all later chapters ignored the technical definition, and sometimes even showed a hazy understanding of the popular term. Meanwhile, three authors with degrees in political science to write the textbook and not one American historian to check and verify they got their facts right when they talked history?

Although to my mind, that’s only true of some myths. I think of myths as collective waking dreams; like other dreams, they may come out of the gate of horn or the gate of ivory.
