I believe that working shields were actually pretty plain, with maybe some paint. For display purposes, they would be decorated with your family’s coat of arms… or at least colors.

After my Dad stopped putting out handfuls of peanuts for his “ pet” squirrel, he learned attack squirrel are real. Dragons not so real.
