Yep. In a fair world, the critters in the zoo would be on equal footing with the visitors. I recall a short story by John Brunner named Coincidence Day in which the interstellar aliens are there to study the earthlings by posing as animals.
Interesting observations…and a far cry from “monkey see, monkey do”.
