This discussion based on urban legends about the âLassieâ TV show reminded me the other day on Facebook when a guy mentioned âBrokeback Mountain.â It turned out that he had never seem the movie nor even read Annie Proulxâs original story. In her story, the last time Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist were together they made up stories about women they had supposedly dated. In the narrative of the story, their lies went up with the smoke in the campfire. When the guys were herding sheep up on Brokeback and spent a night in the tent, Ennis said, âI ainât queerâ to which Jack replied, âMe neither.â Those lies by the campfire had them saying, âWe still ainât queer.â [I read the original COMPLETE story; but, Larry McMurtry, the co-writer of the screen play read what was in a magazine and it omitted the fact that Ennisâs trailer was on a ranch and not in a trailer park.
