Even the casual fans can recognize more members of the Women’s National Team than the Men’s. It seems that most of the guys slamming the USWNT aren’t soccer fans to begin with.
In pro sports, popularity is measured at the box office and the TV ratings. When female sports can equal men in these areas, they will get equal pay. And, not until then.
columbia college would field a club team rather than a varsity back in 1949-1952. but that allowed a few graduate students to play. one of the strikers in 1949 was a lieutenant in the venezuelan navy.
columbia now has a varsity team and has threatened to take the national championship. progress is slow, but it is coming.
think of satchel paige not playing in the world series. that wasn’t that long ago.
