Well, I don’t usually admit to my large number of cats to co-workers or others who ask, because I don’t want to hear "What? You have THAT many cats?! No, I do not live in the country, my cats all live in the house with access to a fenced back yard. But I insist they stay indoors at night and I keep them indoors in winter, except for an occasional peek at the new snow sometimes.
My oldest cat is Ralph. I saved him from my uncle’s farm. He was a few weeks old, not able to drink from a bowl yet. He was in the granary with his sister. Both were wet and cold and it was going to get below freezing that night. Their mom stopped caring for them. I knew they would freeze to death that night if I didn’t take them. I , didn’t ask – I just took them home, bundled them in a blanket and put them by the gas heater. I prayed a lot for them too. The sister was Trixie. She died last year.
Then there are the brothers I got from my sister. She lives in Illinois. I live in a small town in southern Wisconsin. The brothers are Ike, Dexter and Marlow. I also have a cat from my other sister. She had to go to a nursing home to get better care for her cancer. Her worthless hubby (won’t go into that too much – she loves him anyway) wasn’t caring for her as he should have. I don’t know why he could not take Fluffy, but I have her now.
Dolly was dumped on me a few years ago and she presented me with 4 kittens. The kittens turned 3 this month. There’s Uno (the first born in the litter) April, the other girl and the boys, Felix and Tigger. The other brother, Oscar, died from cancer at the tender age of 18 months or whatever it was. I miss him. I miss all my kids who have passed on.
Heathcliff was also dumped on me years ago. it took a few weeks to tame him, but I got him. I got Chip from another cat lady in town (but I’m the official “crazy cat lady”). I’m “fostering” Kay and Snuggles for a brother who will actually never take them back, so they’re mine now.
I swiped 3 cats from another brother while he was in the hospital after bypass surgery. I was taking care of them, going out there every day to feed them and stuff, but decided it would be easier to take them home with me. Then I never gave them back to him. That was 2 years ago. The beautiful abyssinian. Abby, was elderly and had to be put down some months later. She had renal failure. The others are Lovebug and Cassie (the best feminine version I could find for Casanova because she’s a lover too). I found out soon that Cassie was pregnant and she gave me 5 beautiful kittens. They are Joy, Beauty, Junebug, Oreo and darn it, I can’t come up with the other one’s name and my hour on the library computer is running out, so I’ll leave it at that. They will turn 2 in June. They are my youngest.
I have no “significant other” in my life, but my life is full just with these guys. I like gardening too. That’s about it.
