I don’t know, kids. Having your late father AND his horse stuffed and mounted by a taxidermist may have been overkill.

Lawyer and notary Ernst Carl Emil Lau (born 1822) in his house in Jägerstraße wth his wife Anna Ferdinandine Friederike Marie, née Meudtner, and sons Ernst abd Martin. The name of the horse, and the reason for riding the horse inside the house, is not recorded on the museum’s record. See http://www.smb-digital.de/eMuseumPlus?service=ExternalInterface&module=collection&objectId=962823&viewType=detailView for more.

The single leg up pose on the horse must mean that Herr Lau’s wife maimed him for bringing the horse into the house.

Portrait of the Advocate Ernst Lau

(best viewed using Google Chrome, with Google Translate added to chrome://extensions, which can automatically translate most pages as necessary) has info and links that point to info about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting.

all have info, or links that point to more info, about this artist (again, the full first bio is available for free on Fridays, and Chrome can automatically translate the last) perhaps in addition to what’s pointed to by the first URL. So far, 3 works by him have been used here.

has the prior work (my comment there included the 2nd artist info URL).

Again, a larger strip image is shown by clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #2168 (March 27, 2019) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment.

O.K. O.K. I admit, in my younger years to have ridden my horse into saloons and bars on occasions, but what possessed this lawyer to ride his horse in his own home?

Even more puzzling is why the hell the artist painted him doing it!
