Many shops are closing due to the virus. At least here in Italy.

Our local chocolatier folded up last June. They weren’t set up for net sales and their margins were too small to survive.

It may have survived if Brutus sopported the same shop, but he has his own favorite, which is still afloat.

Look on the bright side, Gladys. That shop will have a going out of business sale and you can stock up.

Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. Hopefully the chocolate shop won’t be all she lost.

She’ll have to be satisfied with a Hershey bar from the grocery store impulse rack in the check-out line…

When I was a kid I thought that shops had always been there and always would be… not that I’m, er, older… I’ve noticed how ephemeral they actually are for the most part. (nothing like seeing a sign claiming longevity with “Since 1994!” to make one feel old)

Yep, time they are a changing. When I was a kid, everything was displayed in jars and under glass. So lovely to see. Now it’s all locked up behind cages and in boxes to prevent theft. Even employees have to pass background and drug testing. From all ages. Sad times indeed.

We are fortunate to have three candy shop/chocolatiers in the area. One was thought to have died because of “urban renewal” in the late 70s, but was revived a few years later with the same name and recipes. Each has around 100 years, or better under their belt, so they have learned how to weather different business climates. Now pardon me, my sweet tooth is acting up.
