My moron brother-in-law used to always love to play basketball with me when he was 18 and I was 12. He could show me who was boss and he thought he was pretty special.

My wife would moan and complain if she lost at a board game. She was so annoying about it that I actually played to lose. imagine having a university degree in English and having to lose at Scrabble to a high school drop out. It was humiliating, but at least it kept the peace.

Back in the 70s I hung out at a coffee house which stayed open after bar hours. When the crowd thinned out the Scrabble board would appear. There was a Webster’s International Dictionary for reference, and sometimes the sand timer from Boggle would be used to keep the game moving. One-on-one games could get really intense, with plenty of strategic play. Often the winner was not determined until the last tile was placed.

Because he was in a wheelchair, my husband and I played A LOT of board games at home. We would take turns choosing which one. If I wanted a sure win, I’d go with Scrabble, if he did, we played Chess.
