Sonic Hedgehog is also a gene-protein family found in all Animal phyla from Cnidarian onward. It is critical in embryonic development, mediating the cellular differentiation between nerves, muscles and skin (among other tasks). Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) is very ancient and very conserved, branching off from other Hedgehog suites at least 680 million years ago.
