In 1952, the Kellogg company held a promotional competition to see who would become the mascot for their cereal, Sugar Frosted Flakes. Apart from Tony the Tiger, there were also Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant, and Newt the Gnu. Tony won.
Eventually they dropped the “Sugar” from the front of their cereal’s name and called it Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes instead.
Tony the Tiger was voiced for decades by Thurl Ravenscroft, whose other big claim to fame was singing “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” in the Dr. Seuss special.
In 1952, Tony the Tiger won a popularity contest against three other characters — Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant, and Newt the Gnu — to become the new Frosted Flakes mascot.
